Tachileik is located near Thai border in the eastern Shan State, as a gateway of the Golden Triangle. The Friendship Bridge across Thai(Maesai) and Myanmar(Tachileik). The area is currently being developed for tourism and cross-border trade with Laos, Thailand and China. Tachileik sits on the banks of the Mekong River across from Mai Sai in Thailand.
Tachileik also spelt Tachilek, is a border town in the Shan State of eastern Burma (Myanmar). It is the administrative seat of Tachileik Township and Tachileik District.Tachileik can be accessed from the Thai town of Mae Sai, which sits directly south on the other side of the small Mae Sai River. There are two bridges that provide access between Mae Sai and Tachilek.
Tachileik is mainly used by tourists as an access point to get to Kyaing Tong It may be possible for tourists to take a bicycle across the bridge, but logistically it would be difficult.Burmese merchants used to be able to cross over and do business in Mae Sai for days at a time.
